Members of the Band Our Story

In October of 2005 three gentlemen with similar musical interests met for a fun jam. Ian Moon hosted the event at his home with his good friend, Mark Jaspars. Gary Denick, who they found through a “musicians looking for musicians” web forum joined them. Gary played bass while Ian and Mark played guitars. Here they discovered they had mutual musical tastes and were able to play many songs together.
They continued to meet and share musical fellowship on a regular basis. Around late November of 2005 they decided to take this little jam and turn it into a band. The search for a drummer commenced and Tedd Steele was discovered through the same musician’s forum. Tedd fit in immediately and brought everything together.

Now they needed a name. They all agreed on Shortness Of Breath. The name fit because the players’ average age was on the back side of forty and they liked the idea using the obvious acronym, SOB, for their new band. In April on 2006, they played their first real gig. It was to be an outdoor celebration of Earth Day but an all day deluge turned it into an indoor event in a very small room. So even though the band’s debut was not what they had hoped for the reception of the band and the music was very positive.
Shortness Of Breath continued to rehearse and play out whenever they could. They played at the newly opened Strasburg Theater in July.

Throughout the remainder of the year, the band played several other gigs at The Village Idiot, Bangkok Blues, private events including one for the U.S. Coast Guard, as well as a return engagement at the Strasburg Theater.

2007 saw the band continue to grow as their stage act improved along with a growing song list and additional venues. They performed at benefit shows for various worthy causes. Highlights for the year included the Strasburg Mayfest, the Shenandoah County Fair and the Winchester Chili Challenge.

In July of 2007, Mark announced to the band that he was going to leave the band to start a blues trio. Mark went on to form Concrete Blues and following his true passion which is the blues. The two bands, Shortness Of Breath and Concrete Blues, continue to share the stage and are very supportive of each other's efforts. But now Shortness Of Breath was a three piece band. Ian now faced the challenge of doing all the guitar playing in addition to most of the singing. But he and the band adapted and started to gel as a solid three piece unit.

During the latter part of 2007, the band started to create music of their own. Ian wrote a song called “My Love” that the band recorded and placed on their website and on garageband.com. “My Love” was selected as “Song of the Day” on garageband.com in the fall of 2007 and got many favorable reviews from listeners. This inspired to band to write more and plan to record in 2008.

Following back to back weekend shows at the Eastside Raw Bar in Winchester, Shortness Of Breath spent the next few months concentrating on recording their debut EP. They selected five original songs to be recorded at White Dove Studios in Culpeper, Virginia. Under the watchful eye of engineer Greg Harping they recorded a total of six tracks that were used on the CD.

The CD was released in the summer of 2008. The band sent out a press release and articles were written in the September 4th edition of the Northern Virginia Daily and September 18th, Warren Sentinel.
The CD is sold at Shortness of Breath shows and as of October 1, 2008 the songs are available on iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody and Amazon music. The band ended 2008 with twelve shows in the last three months of the year including such new venues as the Royal Oak Tavern, Horseshoe Curve Restuarant and the Lucky Star Lounge.

In 2009 Shortness Of Breath starts the year with bookings running into December and plans to start recording the next Shortness Of Breath CD. The band is constantly writing new material, adding to their song list and perfecting their stage act. Ian, Gary and Tedd are excited about the new year, the prospects of additional opportunities, new music and new fans. Stay tuned…
